R@re ‘gh)$t fish’ filmed alive for first time on Pacific ocean

For the first time ever an incredibly r@re ‘gh)$t fish’ has been seen alive. The ethereal deep ocean dweller measures just 10 cm long.

It has never before been spotted by researchers, let alone caught on camera. It lives 2 km below the surface in the murky depths of the sea. The fish has almost translucent skin and bulbous, glowing eyes and is very pale. It is thought to belong to the Aphyonidae family.

Okeanus Explorer filmed the elusive fish. He filmed it during an expedition of the Northern Mariana Islands, in the Pacific Ocean.

Dr Bruce Mundy, from the NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service said, ‘ This is just remarkable. I am sure that this is an Aphyonid and I am sure that this is the first time a fish of this family has ever been seen alive. This is really an unusual sighting. A lot of them are only known from single specimens collected by deep sea trawling or dredges.’

According to him seeing the fish was on many experts ‘bucket list’.. Ghost fish have transparent, gelatinous skin and no scales and are eel-like creatures. Their skeletons are only partially calcified as their muscles and gills are underdeveloped.
