Emma said, ‘The latest series of work we’ve produced is the Union of Yoga, it’s celebrating the yoga discipline and looking at how we can combine the spiritualist practice with my art. It’s a series of ten artworks looking at the origins of yoga and then taking the visual interpretations of the actual yoga names and painting them on the human body.’
Through her work, Fay aims to visualize the cohesion between art and spiritual practice. But the process was not simple. She added, ‘To create the series we had to experiment a little bit. To keep true to the pose and to actually paint the chosen subject matter onto the model while in the pose was actually quite challenging. I work with three models and they were chosen because they are yoga practitioners and yogis. The work takes about a day to produce but there’s a lot of research involved, we had to test the poses to find the right angle to shoot the work so that we were also true to the yoga pose itself.’
Her models were all yoga practitioners, and with their help, she was able to create accurate depictions of each yoga pose. The Leicester-based artist said the models did not have to maintain the pose the entire time even though, the final photo requires the models to hold the pose precisely.
